Just 2 weeks to the Council By-Election in Looe West, Pelynt, Lansallos and Lanteglos
Polperro Resident Jimmy Overton and Jim Candy reflecting on the hard work that Jim will need to do to honour Edwina Hannaford’s local legacy.
Jim got into politics in 1990s when he campaigned on behalf of farmers suffering from OP poisoning from sheep dipping, speaking in the House of Commons, with help from Liberal Democrat MPs, including Colin Breed and Paul Tyler. Most of Jim's farming career was on a rented Council farm in Downderry where with his wife Marian, he raised 4 sons, until he retired in 2018. Jim farmed organically after 1999, with the emphasis on habitat management, especially on the land at Hannafore, which was added to his tenancy, Jim served on the Parish Council for 20 years, and Caradon District Council then Cornwall Council until 2017. He has also served on the Executive of SE Cornwall Lib Dems, including spells as Chair. Since retiring Jim has learnt to swim, in the sea all year round, avoiding sewage dumping. Jim and his wife spend time looking after their grandchildren and visiting their son in France.
A Fairer society: Affordable homes for local families; greater control over second homes and holiday rentals
Cost of living: Campaigning to restore free evening parking and abolish the Tamar Tolls
Environment: Tough action to stop sewage discharges into our rivers and sea
Farming: Supporting farmers to deliver food security and manage the countryside

Cllr Leigh Frost (Bodmin St Petroc’s) out campaigning with Jim Candy in West Looe on Monday 19th March
Liberal Democrat Council Candidate for Looe West, Pelynt, Lansallos and Lanteglos, in discussion with Cllr Armand Toms, Councillor for Looe East and Deviock.
We've been campaigning hard in the Looe West, Pelynt, Lansallos and Lanteglos Division ... even in the worst that Cornwall's weather can throw at us!
Jim Candy has been meeting up with many local like-minded thought-influencers in the Division. Here meeting up the Jimmy Overton at Polperro Harbour. Jimmy has a passion for sport, conservation and an even bigger passion for helping others.
The South East Cornwall Liberal Democrats have selected the highly experienced and passionate Jim Candy, as our candidate in the forthcoming By-Election, as successor to the so-much appreciated Edwina Hannaford who sadly passed away very recently.
