Councils vote FIVE TIMES for Toll rise!
The Tamar Bridge Act requires FIVE separate Council votes before bridge and ferry tolls can be changed. Any ONE of these meetings could have blocked the rise.
Liberal Democrats voted against the increase at every opportunity, but on all five occasions, Conservative and/or Labour Councillors voted for tolls to increase by 15% from £2.60 to £3.00. Either of the two big parties could have stopped the increase, but chose not to.
Our Conservative MP gathered thousands of email addresses by promising to oppose the increase. So why didn’t she ask Conservative Councillors to vote against it?
Cllr Jim Candy (Looe West) has noted: “When I, along with other Councillors, met with our Conservative MP in 2013, she said that the Tamar Bridge Act of 1958 prevented her from intervening. After more than a decade of inaction, she’s realised that her seat is at risk, so is finally trying to look like she’s doing something.”
